This month saw a record-breaking 282 winery updates and 166 wineries releasing wine—the highest numbers we've had to date. Definitely a busy month!

Now, let's dive into the wine releases...

I recently visited Saison Wine Bar thanks to an invite from my friends Angeline and Jerry. We had a great time exploring their unique wine flights, each featuring lesser-known varietals. We all chose different flights and really enjoyed comparing the selections. The bar is owned by Mark Bright, whom I met nearly 20 years ago when he was a sommelier at Michael Mina. I reminded him of the one and only time I ever sent back a bottle of wine that wasn’t flawed. I told him the wine was technically sound, but no one at the table was enjoying it—so I asked if we could switch. Mark graciously took it back without hesitation. I’ve never done that before or since, because typically, if the wine isn’t flawed, etiquette says you keep it. When I mentioned it to Mark during our visit, he said it's actually a fairly common request. Still, it’s something I’ve only done that one time.

Visited Gandona Winery with my friend Randall, who was in town from Pismo Beach (longtime readers might remember his earlier days living in Morro Bay and Cayucos) and Gordon and Zac. I was invited by Kelly, Gandona’s director of hospitality, and the experience did not disappoint. First off—the view is absolutely stunning, overlooking Lake Hennessey and surrounded by lush greenery. The wines were distinctive and beautifully crafted, and the tasting table setup was flawless. It made for a truly memorable afternoon.

Later that night we attended the Charles Krug crab event and had a great time. What caught me off guard was that they served the whole crab, body and all, completely uncracked. I ended up giving a little tutorial at the table: how to pop off the shell, remove the lungs and “crab butter,” crack the body, separate the legs, and my favorite pro tip—use a fork to jab between the crab knuckles to get the most meat out of the body. A fun time was had by all.

Our bi-monthly wine tasting was last Thursday, and the theme had a fun twist: a blind wine smackdown meets "bring a bottle worthy of wine of the night." Each wine had to be at least six years old and from either North America or Europe. Sean, our host, organized it brilliantly. He gave us tasting sheets and numbered stickers. We tasted two wines side by side, voted on our favorite, and set the winner aside. The losing wine was retired to the dump bucket, and its sticker was replaced with the next number for the following round. After tasting through 10 wines, we had our top five. We then re-tasted those finalists to crown the ultimate ‘wine of the night.’ Along the way, we also guessed the vintage, varietal, and region. It was a fantastic, interactive way to explore and compare some beautifully aged wines. Sorry, forgot to take photos of the bottles.

To start the tasting off on the right note, I brought a 2023 Nid Tissé Sta. Rita Hills Chardonnay (released this month) that we enjoyed with our appetizers. It was bright, refreshing, and well received by the group.
