WineRelease.com's August 15, 2024 Monthly Newsletter.

This month we had 171 winery updates and 84 wineries releasing wine, a surprisingly busy August for WineRelease.

Last month I had a few friends come up to our place in St. Helena for a little wine weekend. Instead of going to the regular wineries I wanted to visit a new winery so when I read Roy Piper’s (https://roypiperwines.com/) newsletter highlighting Palisades Canyon Winery (https://palisadescanyonwines.com/) and their upcoming first wine release of their 2021 wines, I called the winery and spoke to Felicia (founder) at Palisades for a while and she agreed to host us. My next call was to Roy Piper as I have never visited his winery either, but he was already booked.

Palisades winery has been growing and selling the grapes from their 17 acre winery for the past 10 years but with the 2021 vintage, they started producing their own wine from their Chenin Blanc, Petite Sirah and Cabernet Sauvignon vines. Chenin you say? Well, in the 70’s there were about 750 acres of Chenin Blanc in the valley which fell out of favor for Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. Felicia and her husband Steven want to be stewards of the land and make wine the old fashioned way which means planting Chenin Blanc (currently there are only around 20 acres of Chenin planted in the valley) and changing all their vine trellising to head pruned vines. When we arrived, they were excited about telling their story and often argued over who would tell the story about the old barn, the vines, the wine, the property.

Palasades Canyon Winery was the 118th bonded winery in California.

We had a lovely visit and relaxing tasting surrounded by vineyards and a beautiful backdrop of the surrounding mountains.

Also this month I am publishing my “weekend in the Napa Valley” document and focusing on Yountville to help first time Napa Valley visitors spend a relaxing wine filled weekend. Yountville offers great restaurants and wineries within walking distance from local hotels. I built the itinerary with choices of wineries and restaurants in Yountville and the surrounding area. I recommend a Saturday morning tasting at a winery outside of Yountville then lunch and further winery visits in Yountville while your car is at the hotel to avoid drinking and driving. All the links go to a website or address point on Google Maps that allow you to easily use your phone to navigate the cute town.
