WineRelease.com's May 15, 2024 Monthly Newsletter.

This month we had 215 winery updates and 106 wineries releasing wine.

The past month has been a whirlwind of exciting wine events. I journeyed to Bordeaux, San Sebastian, and Burgundy, where I visited a dozen wineries, and explored four wineries in Epernay, Champagne. Along the way, I took the opportunity to update my recommendation guides for Paris and Epernay, crafted a guide for San Sebastian, and I put together a detailed recommended Burgundy itinerary to streamline trip planning for this remarkable region. Planning a trip to Burgundy can be more challenging than other wine regions, as many wineries are not open to the public, and those that do offer tastings require appointments. Ideally, you should start planning months in advance to coordinate tastings, transportation, and meals. I spent many hours emailing and calling, followed by additional follow-ups, as even the wineries that offer consumer tastings often do not respond promptly to requests. Due to numerous requests for Burgundy recommendations, I have put together a busy itinerary based on our trip. As my friends can confirm, I tend to maximize my vacation time by packing in as many activities as possible to fully experience a region, and Burgundy is no exception. Since we visited a few wineries that are not open to the public (such as Remoissenet Pere et Fils, Domaine Pousse d'Or, Domaine Couvent, Domaine Heresztyn-Mazzini, and Domaine Arlaud), I substituted other recommended wineries that offer tastings. The week in Burgundy itinerary here: "Burgundy, a recommended itinerary."

1988 Felix Volnay LesCailleres
I visited my favorite wine restaurant, Vantre, and enjoyed our customary blind tasting session. The white wine turned out to be a 1990 Puligny Montrachet 1er Cru La Garenne from Gerard Thomas. Everyone guessed it to be younger than the 2000 vintage due to its vibrant character, so we were very surprised to discover it was from 1990.

1988 Felix Volnay LesCailleres
The red wine wine was a 1988 Volnay "Les Cailleres" from Felix Clerget. The wine still retained its vitality and proved to be exceptionally delightful.

We spent a day in Bordeaux (stayed at the Burdigala Hotel) on our way to San Sebastian and while in Bordeaux, my friend and I took an Airbnb experience called the "Saint-Emilion Wine Tour." During the tour, we explored Saint-Emilion and visited several wineries, including Chateau Tour Baladoz and Le Chatelet.

We took a train from Bordeaux to Hendaye then an Uber to our Airbnb in San Sebastian. My first introduction to this delightful beach town dates back to 2008 when my wife and I resided in Madrid. Instantly captivated by its charm, we were enamored with San Sebastian's renowned tapas, known locally as pintxos. Compelled by our love for the culinary scene, I curated a comprehensive recommendation guide, featuring the most delectable tapas spots alongside two upscale dining establishments. San Sebastian prides itself on a distinctive gastronomic tradition where patrons indulge in a variety of dishes across multiple eateries in a single evening. You can find the three-page guide linked San Sebastian: "San Sebastian Old Town Recommendations", and it's also accessible on our "Other" page, where various editorial materials such as interviews, surveys, podcasts, recommendations and travel narratives are located.

In Burgundy, we chose to stay at Hotel de la Poste in Beaune because back in 2000, we stumbled upon it and were captivated by its ideal central location and great value. In recent years, it had become a bit run-down according to the reviews. Thankfully, the hotel underwent a significant renovation from November 2023 to April 2024. As a result, we were delighted to find that our five-night stay was less than $900.

Our first wine tasting was a visit to Le Marche aux Vins/Boutique Wine Market where they start you off in their downstairs cellar to sample four wines where you self-pour (I don't remember a self pour winery in the US). After our cellar trip, we walked upstairs to their tasting area where the premium experience (priced at 49 euros) begins. Our host was Amelia (who also hosted us in March) and she has been there for decades and unfortunately for future visitors, she is retiring this month. She poured us the standard set of wines and knowing we preferred white Burgundies, she graciously poured us two Puligny-Montrachet wines, both of which I ended up purchasing. The shop offers a diverse range of producers. While appointments aren't necessary, I decided to make one anyway.

On Tuesday, our journey began at Remoissenet Pere et Fils, where we had the pleasure of meeting Pierre Rovani. Yes, that Pierre Rovani—the same individual who crossed paths with Parker while working at MacArthur’s wine shop in Washington DC. Parker, impressed by Rovani's knowledge and passion, extended an invitation to join The Wine Advocate team. Initially, Rovani assumed he would serve as Parker's assistant, but to his pleasant surprise, Parker entrusted him with the task of covering Burgundy's writing and reviewing. For a decade, Rovani dedicated himself to this role. Then, in 2005, Remoissenet underwent a significant transition when it was acquired by Edward and Howard Milstein, prominent banking executives from New York. They approached Rovani with an offer to join Remoissenet and help elevate the winery's standards, to which he eagerly agreed. This opportunity fulfilled Rovani's long-standing dream of managing a winery. In his role, he oversees overall operations and plays a crucial role in identifying and acquiring vineyards—a pivotal task, considering Remoissenet's primarily negociant status prior to 2005, sourcing grapes from other producers. We barrel tasted 2023 vintages of Pernand Vergelesses Sous Fretille 1er Cru, Beaune Les Teurons 1er Cru, Beaune Les Greves 1er Cru, Charmes Chambertin Grand Cru, Pernand Vergelesses Blanc, Beaune Montagne Saint Desire. I have to mention that Pierre was incredibly nice.

Pierre utilized a wine thief to offer us a barrel tasting of their 2023 wines.

After we barrel tasted he had some 2022 wines in bottle waiting for us to taste but then we realized we had to get to the bike shop before it closed for lunch. Pierre drove us to the bike shop and we were on our way. Extremely nice of him.

So we got our bikes and were on our way to explore Volnay and Pommard. Hiring a taxi/car service can be costly, and predicting the duration of tastings can be tricky so waiting for a car in remote areas when your tasting ends early or cutting short a delightful tasting experience isn't ideal. At the bike shop we rented standard "electric assistance" bikes from Bourgogne Randonnées for the day, but for future Burgundy trips (though currently unplanned), I'm inclined to rent the premium bikes for three days. This way, we can spend two days exploring the north and one day venturing south of Beaune. Biking through the vineyards offers an unforgettable experience, immersing us in the sights and scents of the vines in a way that's vastly different from viewing it through the windows of a car.

At Domaine Pousse d'Or, we were warmly welcomed by Marleen, who guided us through the winery before leading us to the cellar for a tasting of their freshly bottled 2022 wines. Impressed by the quality, we decided to purchase several bottles of their 2022 Puligny Montrachet.

Wednesday we started at Domaine Couvent with Paul, the next generation winemaker hosting us. He tasted us on 2022 Bourgogne Cote d’ Or Les Jumelles Pinot Noir, Gevrey-Chambertin Clos du Couvent Monopole, Chambolle-Musigny Les Quarante Ouvrees and Gevery-Chambertin La Romanee Monopole 1er Cru.

We then took a 14-minute taxi from Nuits Saint Georges to Gevrey Chambertin, where we enjoyed a satisfying lunch at Les Griottes. With some extra time afterward, my friend Joyce and I visited the Gevrey-Chambertin Tourist Office. We were thoroughly impressed by the extensive information on vineyard practices and winemaking, along with displays showcasing soil samples of chalk and various types of limestone found in the area.

Later, we met up with our friends who had just arrived from Paris to join our trip. Together, we headed to Domaine Lucien Boillot et Fils. We revisited Lucien Boillot et Fils (we visited the weekend of March 22nd), where Pierre hosted us and offered a tasting of his 2023 Pinot Noirs straight from the barrel. It was a delightful preview of wines that will grace restaurant menus in two years. While Domaine Lucien Boillot et Fils typically don’t offer consumer tastings, Sophie, Pierre’s wife, has made an exception for WineRelease subscribers. I highly recommend including them in your Burgundy itinerary.

One of our gourmet dinners during this trip was at Le Bistro de L’Hotel, where we dined in March. The restaurant is renowned for its incredibly tasty "Poularde de Bresse" chicken. We ordered both their 'aged' and regular chicken, and while both were amazing, the regular chicken received slightly more votes. Their wine list, which is two inches thick, includes some excellent bargains. We invited Sophie, Pierre, and their daughter Camille to join us (Cami had worked at Sapiens for a summer while attending college) and they brought a magnum of their wine to share. We all had a fantastic time.

On Thursday we started our day at Domaine Heresztyn-Mazzini where we tasted their newly labeled 2022 wines. A great way to start the day.

For lunch we went to Morey-Saint-Denis at Castel De Tres Girard before walking to our next tasting at Domaine Arlaud.

I visited Domaine Arlaud back in 2000 with my friend Nick Ramkowsky, who worked with North Berkeley Imports. I remember buying three cases of their red wines and enjoying those wines for years. On this trip, Marius treated us to tastings of unlabeled 2022 bottles (also known as 'shiners') including their Bourgogne Roncevie, Morey St Denis Village, Morey 1er Cru Aux Cheseaux, Morey 1er Cru Les Ruchots, Clos de la Roche Grand Cru, Charmes Chambertin Grand Cru, and their new label, Bourgogne Chardonnay Scritch. The latter name refers to the grating sound reminiscent of chalk scratching on a chalkboard.

And last, but not least, I took a very educational cooking class “Mastering Classic French Sauces” in Paris offered by La Cuisine Paris (https://lacuisineparis.com), that I wish I had taken years ago. I’ve taken a lot of cooking classes, but this class will be the most useful. In this three-hour class, we learned to make two classic cold sauces; French Vinaigrette and Mayonnaise and also made three classic French sauces; Bechamel Sauce, Port Wine Sauce, Bearnaise Sauce and Red Wine and Shallot Sauce and we finished with two dessert sauces; Caramel au Beurre sale and classic chocolate. When I first read we would be learning a French vinaigrette I thought to myself “I already know how to make a vinaigrette” but boy was I wrong. Granted my vinaigrette was good but learning how/when to whisk vs mix and how to tell when you have the right amount of oil/salt/pepper is extremely helpful. I added the class to my Paris Recommendation document so download it if you haven’t already.

And now, onto the wine releases...
