WineRelease.com's November 15, 2012 Monthly Newsletter.

We had 248 winery updates since last month, which I think has to be a record. Included in those updates were wine releases for 2013 that have been added since last month.

While many in the wine world have been focused on harvest over the past few months, weve been in the heat (literally) of our Indian Summer in Northern California, which has been a great excuse to do a bit of entertaining, taking advantage of some of our sponsor wines. One of my favorite current pairings is the 2008 Kimmel Merlot from Mendocino, which went really really well with a new dish that were making: caramelized eggplant (found in surplus at our neighborhood farmers market on Saturday mornings) with salted tomatoes, roasted garlic in anchovies, and capers; tossed with penne pasta and garnished with fresh herbs from the garden. The hint of leather and cedar, with the notes of berries in the Merlot were just perfect with the sweetness of the caramelized eggplant. Here is a link to the New York Times pasta recipe video:

Recently, we thought wed attempt a simple dinner of butternut squash soup (think roasted chestnuts, pancetta, green apple, cumin, coriander, etc), grilled French bread, and a nice salad of local arugula topped with spiced pecans, dried cranberries and roasted squash. One of our friends decided to roast up a whole host of vegetables as an appetizer, which included a little plate of goat cheese and fresh herbs rolled in peppers. This gave us a great excuse to break out a bottle of our sponsor wine, 2005 Rosenthal Meritage from Malibu Canyon, whose dark spicy notes were a great complement to the root vegetables, and enjoyed by all.

One of our favorite dinners in the past month was hosted by dear friends, who do an somewhat annual Chateau Montelena themed dinner, this time serving Julia Childs cucumber soup (paired with the Chardonnay) and orange roasted duck, followed by an exquisite cheese course and a pumpkin custard for dessert. The story goes that many years ago, when Jack and Linda first started dating, he went to put his coat in her hall closet and found cases and cases of Montelena. He knew at that moment that it was true love and theyve hosted a Chateau Montelena dinner almost every year since.

In addition to dinners, brunches, and happy hours, we attended a really fun event last weekend, French American International School and International High Schools Soiree des Arts et des Vins, held at the San Francisco Ferry Building, which raised over $60,000 for the school and was attended by over 400 people. Some of our longtime favorite wineries (like Hourglass and Flowers) were there, as well as some new favorites. In addition to the delicious wines and food from many restaurants in the Hayes Valley neighborhood of San Francisco, where the school is located, it was a great crowd and we enjoyed ourselves immensely. The Soiree will definitely become an annual must-attend event for us.

Every few years, I conduct a subscriber survey. Its that time again, so please watch your email inbox. Id really appreciate your taking a few minutes to complete the survey and will report back the findings once the results are tallied.

And now, onto the wine.
