WineRelease.com's May 15, 2003 Monthly Newsletter

Greetings from WineRelease.com, now 791 wineries strong! Closing in on 800 wineries.

There is a lot of press about sub $5 wines (Two Buck Chuck/Napa Ridge/Black Box Wines) recently. Some wine folks shrug it off and see it as a threat to their business. I disagree. I found out about Charles Shaw (Two Buck Chuck) from my brother-in-law over a year ago. He wasn't a wine drinker at the time, but his is now. Eventually he will move up the ladder and branch out to other wines, just as I did 12 years ago.

On my first wine trip to France 7 years ago, I was amazed at the wine values of "village wine" and learned that wine doesn't have to cost over $50 to be good, and should be priced at a level that allows the average Joe to enjoy a glass or two with his daily dinner. I think the sub $5 category of wine will increase the overall wine consumption in this country to one day, surpass beer. I see it as "a good thing".

And now, on to the show...

June 2003 Wine Releases

May's recommended winery mailing lists to join:

Davis Family Vineyards
Guy Davis started making wine a few years ago and recently to a big step and purchased a winery facility. He makes limited production, handcrafted wines at reasonable prices. I went on a wine trip to France with him back in 1996 and was impressed with his passion for wine and winemaking.
I don't think he has a mailing list yet, but if you email him winemaker@davisfamilyvineyards.com, I am sure he will start one if he doesn't have one already.

Pride Mountain Vineyards
I can't believe I haven't featured Pride yet. Pride sits atop Spring Mountain and straddles Sonoma and Napa counties. They produce Viognier, Merlot, Chardonnay, Cabernet Franc, but are best known for their Cabernet Sauvignon,

May's recommended web site to visit:

SFGate.com's Wine Section
My hometown paper, the San Francisco Chronicle, has a new wine page that appears every Wednesday with reviews and news about wine and the industry.

Till next month!
